The christening of a precious child is a treasured family occasion. When friends and family gather, many want to commemorate the special day in a unique way.

At important times like this, how do you know if your gift will communicate your intended wishes? Test your gift ideas against these three questions:

Will this gift serve as a lasting legacy of my hope for this child’s future?
Does this gift show my support for this child’s spiritual growth?
Is this gift thoughtful and from my heart?

If you can say yes to these three questions, your gift will be well received! Here are some ideas to get you started:

1. Time Capsule – Fill a lovely tin or box with mementos from the year of the child’s Christening. Add things such as a newspaper page, a church bulletin, the Christening announcement, a photo, a recording of a greeting and a CD of music. Include a note addressed to the child when she is 16 reminding her of your belief in her, or select another age that is meaningful to you. Seal the box and affix a tag saying when it should be opened.

2. A Gift of Stewardship – Give a gift of stewardship in a child’s name. Purchase a goat for a South American farm family from Heifer International, and write a note to the parents saying that you hope that as their beautiful child grows, so will the help that this goat offers the needy family. Or “adopt” a child in need of monthly care, and share the photos and letters with the family. Pets are also in need of stewardship: try Bestbuddies.org, as knowing he helped an abandoned puppy will delight a child as he grows.

3. Promise Bond – Purchase a savings bond that has an intended goal. Attach a card that says that when it matures, you hope that the recipient is able to use it to participate in a fellowship activity or to attend a special workshop.

4. Stewardship Savings Account – Alternatively, start a Stewardship Savings Account for the child with instructions that when she is old enough, she may decide where the funds will be disbursed.

5. Photo Book – Make a book on your printer, at a resource such as Lulu.com, or by scrapbooking showing the child their church, congregation and its programs. Feature the child’s family and friends as much as possible so that the child can see their inclusion in the church as a personal story.

6. Start a Family Heirloom – Instead of buying a new cross or Bible, consider passing on one that you have treasured so that a tradition can be born.

7. Christmas Ornament – Sometimes people don’t think of ornaments if it isn’t Christmas time, but a commemorative ornament is a lovely gift, even in May! Each year when in is put on the tree the child and their parents will be reminded of the special day.

8. Keepsake Box for the Gown – Purchase a keepsake storage box and a gift certificate from a dry cleaners so that the parents will be able to easily store the Christening gown.

9. Christening Family Photos – If the child was born into a family with siblings or cousins, make a small scrapbook of the family’s other Christening Days, reserving a spot for the baby’s photos. Or for a first child, start an album with the child’s parents’ christening photos.

and the best gift, you!

10. Certificate for an Outing with You – Make a date with the child in the future, perhaps after their confirmation, or on a certain birthday. Describe where you will take her and how you will describe exactly how she looked (and sounded!) during her christening.

With a unique, meaningful gift for the child in hand, celebrate this joyous occasion while holding great hope in your heart for the future.

Christening Poems
-Verse #1

You have come into the world so tiny,
Yet with such great promise for the future.
Before you were even born,
God planned wonderful things for you.
As you are baptised,
May you feel His love
And the love of those around you,
And may you always follow in His way.
