Sex Education

Shoot the Messenger

The birds and the bees. Do we teach it to our kids in schools, and if so, to what degree?

There’s been a bit of a buzz (pardon the pun) in the media of late about sex education, and whether or not the current provision is adequate to prepare our girls and boys and somewhere-in-betweens for sexual maturity.

The latest discussions have centred around whether there is enough real life emotion being introduced into lessons. It’s all very well knowing that (usually) Manifold A gets inserted into Sprocket B, but does this basic biology really equip you for proper sexual encounters?

At first, I applauded the idea of introducing sex AND relationship education classes. After all, when I went to school, we weren’t taught any life skills. Nothing we learnt was given any relevance to real life. I was fortunate enough to have a mother who taught me life…

As Poppy was flying through the trees,

A cry for help was heard

Upon the leaf of a dandelion

She saw a tiny ladybird

Poppy settled down beside the ladybird

To find out what was wrong

The ladybird answered tearfully

All of my beautiful spots have gone

They were stolen by a pixie

When I was fast asleep

Poppy was quite angry

For she knew it was Pixie Pete

He was always being mischievous

So poppy sought the help of a friend

She asked Elvis the elf for assistance

To bring Pete’s thieving to an end

They scoured the forest together

They found Pixie Pete, who looked quite pale,

He was so sorry for his actions

But alas he was put into jail

All the spots were recovered

And taken back to the ladybird

Who was deliriously happy?

As for Poppy, three cheers could be heard.

I’ve started on a see food diet.
I highly recommend you try it.
You eat whatever food you see;
a grape, a crepe, a pear, a pea,
a candy cane, some bubble gum,
a piece of pie, a peach, a plum,
banana pancakes, chicken legs,
a dozen donuts, deviled eggs,
spaghetti noodles, sirloin steaks,
vanilla ice cream, birthday cakes,
a hundred pizzas, chocolate mousse,
and gallon jugs of apple juice.

The see food diet. Just can’t beat it.

Whenever you see food, you eat it.
I’m pretty sure you won’t lose weight,
But, what the heck? The food is great!

In the morning when I awake
still half asleep yearning for more
I often stop to think
what life was like living before.
When man had to forage for food
no Supermarkets in the land
things were not bought in packets
nothing was to hand.
When bread had to be baked at home
vegetables grown in a field
tea imported from India or China
you ate what your father could yield.
Clothing was made by the Mother or Wife
cows were milked in the barn
no chemicals then to make things last
materials were made of Yarn.
No wasteage created because of bulk
food mountians never created
no such thing as salmonella
were many deaths today were fated.
No refrigerators to keep the food
freezers not yet used
so how come nowadays we still have waste?
food has been abused.
Sell by dates, best before?
never heard of in the past
food was kept in a larder
not in bulk just enough to last.
Do not eat this? don’t touch that
its enough to drive you insane
diets for this allergies for that
meaningless and inane.
How many people died of food poison
in the days before sell by dates?
statistics say not very many
its in our time this fad dictates.
What did people do before the refrigerator? did you ever hear of sell by dates? best before years ago? no, because in this “careful” society of e numbers and what have you, people are scared into the fact that food cannot be eaten after a certian time? this is nonsense, eggs, milk etc never had sell by dates until recent times, fact.
Can you remember the days before refrigeration?

100% Natural? Think Again!

As a mom, I am always trying to make the healthiest choices for my kiddos. Fresh Fruits, Whole Grains, Veggies, Lean Meats, you name it.  I thought I was being a great mom, here I was just fooling myself by misguided labels.  Just because the label states 100% Natural, does not mean it actually is.  100% Natural is chocked full of nasty GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms).

What is a GMO? It  is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. Organisms that have been genetically modified include micro-organisms such as bacteria and yeast, insects, plants, fish, and mammals. GMOs are the source of genetically modified foods, and are also widely used in scientific research and to produce goods other than food. The term GMO is very close to the technical legal term, ‘living modified organism’ defined in the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, which…

Everyone has heard people say how fast food is either great or horrible. As with everything people say, there is usually some truth to it. We will go over the advantages and disadvantages of fast food in this article.

Most people eat fast food. Some eat it more often than others, and some like it more than others. Our taste buds tend to be different, so our opinions will vary from person to person. The following advantages and disadvantages are pretty standard and we have tried to be as unbiased as possible.

Advantages of Fast Food

There are three main advantages to fast food.

  • You can save money because fast food tends to be cheaper than the alternatives.
  • You can save time as there is very low or no waiting time for food to be served.
  • There are many healthy fast food options now so no need to eat fat-filled burgers and fries.

Save Money

Advantages and Disadvantages of Fast Food

This is probably the most important incentive for people to eat fast food. Fast food is usually much cheaper than homemade meals and dine-in restaurants. Because of that, it is the most common meal choice of lower class folks in our societies.

Having said that, fast food is eaten by almost everyone. Some of the most popular athletes in the world eat fast food. Even our president eats fast food here and there. It is definitely not limited to poor people, despite the way the media portrays it.

Save Time

The second most obvious reason is because fast food is, well, fast. There is very low or no waiting period. Food is usually prepared in matter of minutes and you can be on your way.

Most fast food restaurants also have drive-thru’s, which allow customers to order even more quickly. Now we don’t even have to get out of our cars to purchase food. When compared to traditional restaurants, you could be saving over an hour of time from ordering to finishing your meal.

Healthy Choices

Although fast food has a reputation for being high in calories and fat, that is slowly changing with the rise of the health-conscious population, which is increasing the demand for healthy food options.

Just about every fast food restaurant offers some kind of healthy alternatives today. Whether it’s grilled chicken sandwiches, wraps, or salads, there is usually something for everyone.

One thing to keep in mind is that healthier options generally tend to be a little more expensive. But because it is fast food, you are still going to save money over homemade foods.

Disadvantages of Fast Food

Fast food had many more disadvantages in the past couple of decades. Today, the industry is expanding into offering types of foods that cater to virtually anyone.

There are two main disadvantages we’ll take a look at:

  • Lower quality foods that are usually caused by a large-scale production process.
  • More fattening foods that are mainly caused by the lower quality food sources.

Lower Quality Food

There’s no doubt about it, fast food is made in a bulk production process, which tends to lower the overall quality of food. Granted, chicken is chicken, so we’re not talking about eating rat meat here.

A lot of the fast food restaurants such as Chipotle have started using organic vegetables, hormone-free beef, and cage-free chickens. This is greats news for both consumers and animals.

More Fattening

Historically speaking, fast food has been very fattening. The production process involved in creating fast food added a lot of greasy and fat content to foods. However, as mentioned in the healthy choices section above, this is quickly changing.

While most restaurants have your normal greasy burgers and fries, they have also started to offer grilled chicken, fish, salads, and healthy wraps. So whether you’re looking to eat a nice greasy meal or a healthy grilled sandwich, fast food restaurants have what you want.

As mentioned in this article, fast food restaurants and industry as a whole have come a long way. There are many more options now and a lot of those are much healthier than what we’re used to.

Some fast food restaurants such as Panera Bread and Subway have completely adopted a healthy food business model.

What do you think of our advantages and disadvantages of fast food?
