Lights Play a Central Role in the Blessed Celebration of Christmas
(Much of the content of this poem comes from experiences of my childhood in New Orleans. I originally wrote it for use in it in my personal Christmas card many years ago. I offer it now as my way of wishing you a Christmas filled with blessings and joy and the light of Christ’s love! )
The Lights of Christmas
Bonfires built on levees guide Papa Noel
That he may find his way along Big Muddy.
And in the glow of dancing flames the children laugh and play,
Their eyes alight and faces shining ruddy.
Department stores are all dressed up with windows draped and lit.
Their tableaux share the space with goods for sale.
And passing shoppers comment on the decorator’s art
Depicting scenes from some old classic tale.
A house festooned with tiny lights takes on a magic air.
It changes to enchantment with one “click.”
Trees and shrubs now shimmer with ten thousand twinkling points –
A dream awakened like a sorcerer’s trick.
Candles flicker on the sill and scatter darkness there.
They send a greeting through the night to all.
The promise made of welcome and fellowship to share
Is kept by those who dwell within the hall.
A Christmas tree stands proudly clad in tinsel, balls and lights,
And seems to rest on presents stacked below.
This monolith of memories holds the generations close
With old and new both proudly hung to show.
The light of the first Christmas shone bright in midnight sky –
One star that gleamed much closer than the rest.
It led the way for shepherds and magi to the place
Where Jesus rested soft at Mary’s breast.
And there they found the true Light of Christmas then and now
As we may find it if we only seek Him.
The brightest Light t’will ever shine comes to our hearts from God
In His Own Son, there born in Bethlehem.
This year instead of “merry” or “Yuletide” in my wish
I’ll greet you with the greatest gift I know.
“God’s blessings on you on this day which celebrates His Son.
He travels with you everywhere you go.”
“He came that we might live in Light, escaping Darkness’ snare.
He knows our hurts and every pain we have.
His warmth and light bring healing, peace and life eternally.
Receive His Gift. He faithfully will save.”
